Birdwatch Ireland Westmeath Branch was established in 2009 to promote birdwatching and bird conservation in Westmeath as well as offering regular meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month from Sepftember to May and regular field trips.

We have been overwhelmed by the response of our members since this branch was established and look forward to providing a range of activities and trips of interest to all members and ages.

Attracting Garden Birds

In 2012 try putting out feeders to attract a variety of birds to your garden. standard bird seed is always good for the Chaffinches, Greenfinches and House Sparrows, Nuts are a staple of the Tit family. Suet or Porrage oats will typically attract Starlings.

Niger seed is excellent for Goldfinches and insect based seeds are very good for attracting Blackbirds and Robins.

Planting berry bushes or trees will attract an excellent variety of winter birds, Rowan is especially succesful for Waxwings and Whitethorn for Redwing and Fieldfare.
